Dec 11th HG Class

In today's class, we've got the test papers that we took yesterday back. Well surprisingly, I got the highest score in the class. I've got 32 questions right out of 33 questions so I've got 97%. This was surprising result to me because I was little worried about my score because I missed the last class before the quiz which is the review session. Well I think I've been rewarded what I worked. So I feel very proud and happy. Also my score was the highest among the class. We also did the review of the test. We went over all the questions and now I know the answer of the question that I got wrong. I feel I need to prepare harder for my mid term exam.

I was absence for the class yesterday because I was sick. But today I felt better so I came to school.
As Mr.Schick mentioned pretty while ago, today we took the test about Cultural Characteristics and the movie Slum dog Millionaire. Though I wasn't in class yesterday, so I missed some parts and the review time for the quiz. But I studied pretty hard at night yesterday with my Chinese friends Ryan and Alex. Test was pretty fine than I thought. I was worried about the test because it can be very effective if you miss the class just before the test. I can say that I've putted a lot of effort on these so that I don't have to feel bad looking at my score. There were some questions that were confusing but I hope my grades are pretty fine.

Dec 5th HG Class

Today's class, we finished talking about Cultural Characteristics and we started to talk about "Five Major Religions in the World" These are what we did today in the class.
Christianity
  • Number of adherents: around 2.2 billion (largest in the world)
  • Call them: Christians
  • Geographic Location: Europe, the Americas, Southern Africa
  • Denominations: Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Protestants ( Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, many more)
  • Founder: Jesus Christ (it's Abrahamic in Origin)
  • Holy Book: Bible, Especially the new Testament
  • Beliefs: Jesus is both human and divine - the Son of God; he led virtuous life; he was crucified, died, buried, and resurrected; he ascended into heaven where he reigns with God the Father
  • Clergy: The Pope is the head of the church, priests are local authorities

Islam
  • Number of adherents: 1.5 billion (second largest)
  • Call them: Muslims
  • Geographic Location: Indonesia, Middle East, North Africa
  • Denominations: Sunnis (75-90%), Shiites (10-20%)
  • Founder: Muhammad (570-632)
  • Holy Book: Qur'an
  • Beliefs: monotheistic, Abrahamic, Five Pillars(Testimony, prayer, alms-giving, fasting, pilgrimage)
  • Muslims see their purpose in life as serving and submitting to Allah(God), and observing Islamic law

Hinduism
  • Number of adherents: 1.1 billion (third largest)
  • Call them: Hindus
  • Geographic Location: India, Nepal
  • Holy Book: the Vedas - eternal truths revealed to ancient sages; written in verse form ( meant to be sung and easily memorized)
  • Founder: no distinct founder - it is a series of intellectual or philosophical points of view, rather than a rigid, strict, set of beliefs - probably the oldest religion, although Hinduism is less a religion than a way of life, or a faith
  • Ex)"As a person puts on new clothes and discards old and torn clothes, similarly an embodied soul  enters new material bodies, leaving the old bodies"

In the beginning of today's class Mr.Schick told us about his experience working in the film field. It was pretty interesting that he worked with so many celebrities. After that we started talking about cultural characteristic again. Today, what we basically talked about cultural characteristics was about the organizations in the world.

Spatial divisions
  • Spatial divisions are how we divide the livable space found on the earth by establishing  social, economic, and political control
  • You can be a member of more than one spatial group
  • Spatial divisions can also cause conflicts or cooperation

Examples of Spatial Divisions
  • Countries
  • Economic Alliances - European Union(EU), Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC)
  • OPEC is the organization of the countries who sells the oils to other countries. They meet frequently and discuss how much they are going to sell oil.

In today's Human Geography class, we talked about the examples of religion from Cultural Characteristic. Well, the main point of today's discussion was though all the religions are based on peace and to corporate but why are they fighting killing each other because of the religion difference. Well in my opinion, it is really weird to fight because of the religion difference. Because I don't have a religion so I don't know what they teach in the churches and the temples, but I'm pretty sure all those religions are based on peace, share and help. These are the examples of religion difference fights happened in the world.
  • Religion can be both a unifying force.
  • There are five major religions in the world today--Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
  • They have millions of followers all believing the same thing
  • Religion can also be a dividing force around the world.
  • Hindus and Muslims fight in India(Hindu) and Pakistan(Muslim)
There are conflicts between Catholics and Protestants (two forms of Christianity) in Northern Ireland

Dec 2nd HG Class

Dec 2nd HG Class

Today's class Cultural Characteristic. Cultural Characteristic are parts of a group everyday life. They are ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members. These same characteristics can also link or divide a region. The most important word in the definition of Cultural Characteristic is to teach.
Examples of Cultural Characteristics would be language, religion, and ethnic heritage

Language
  • Arabic unites the Arab world
  • Spanish unites the Hispanic world
Brazil is the only South American nation which does not speak Spanish. They speak Portuguese.
Canada is a bilingual nation. French and English are their official languages.

-Switzerland has multiple languages but very little conflict between the groups
-English is now considered the world language and is used for most business transactions around the world

Ethnic Heritage
  • In Yugoslavia, many ethnic groups were made into one country (Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Albanians).
  • When strong leadership died out, the different groups fought a very bloody civil war and now they all have separate countries

Example of Cultural Characteristics
  • In the countries of Rwanda and Burundi in Africa, Two ethnic groups are dominant, the Tutsis and the Hutus.
  • When one group is in power and they persecute another. Hutus<->Tutsis
  • There are constant war going on between Hutus and Tutsis
  • On the island of Cyprus, the Greeks and the Turks try to gain control

  • US and Switzerland have peacefully merged multiple ethnic groups in their countries.(people come to US from all over the world)
  • Korean and Japan primarily one ethnic group

Nov 25th HG Class

Today was the last day of school before going to Thanksgiving Holiday break. Anyway in today's Human Geography class we finished watching the movie. To tell my opinion about the movie first, well before watching movie my expectation was not high. But after I finished watching this movie, what I thought was that this is pretty cool movie that gives me many lessons and thoughts. The movie's ending was everything gets fine again and Jamal wins 20 million Rupes and find Lakita. The process of this result was very complicated and hard for him. Because he had faced many dangerous situations that might have killed him. After finish watching this movie I started to thank everything I have that I used to think is certain. I want to say thank you to Mr.Schick for giving us chance to watch this cool movie.

Nov 21st HG Class

Today's class was also watching the movie, the same movie. I wanted to know the title of the movie so I asked Mr.Schick. The title of movie is "Slum Dog Millionaire". In the parts that we saw today, Jamal and Salim were sent to some place where there are a lot of orphans and learning how to sing. Jamal realized that the place was teaching kids sing and make them blind which is really ridiculous.
So they ran away from there. But on their way running away they couldn't take the girl Lakita who was running away with them. They learned how to survive in big cities. Such as stealing people's stuffs and sell which is not good. Anyway after few years they decided to come back to Mumbai to find Lakita. They found Lakita but they got caught by the man who they flee away from in the past. A really bad situation has came and Salim pulled out the gun and killed the man. After that they ran away again but this time with Lakita. This is the end of the part we watched today. Well, I really think this movie makes me think a lot. Because this shows like the real poor people who live in terrible situation. What I want to say is, I really enjoy watching this movie.

Nov 20th HG Class

We started watching the movie. The movie took place in harlem of Mumbai, India. It was the not educated Chai Wawa guy attend in the TV quiz show and win a million dollar. But the guy gets arrested and get beaten buy police, how did you cheated. But, boy did not cheated in the quiz, he got them all right by his own ability. For instance, police were beating him because he is non educated person and how he can get those hard questions even lawyers and doctors couldn't get right. The movie shows how he knows the answer every time each questions. It was all from his childhood experience. To give an example from movie. The quiz was "Who was the most famous actor in 1970s." Well because he was passionated about that actor and he got signature in his autograph, he could get that question right. As I can see in the movie there are tons of people in India who live in really bad habit like they're washing clothes in the dirty river, trashes are all around them, houses are just to keep them from rain, do not have food, bad poverty where police do not care what's happening. I felt it is sad that there are many people in India who live in those situations. They were even killing each other because of just the religion difference. They are not being treated as a human. They don't get their human rights. Well, we will be keep watching this movie and I feel like I am going to learn a lot of things from this movie.

Today's class, Mr.Schick taught us about the Cultural Geography. First he told us the description of Cultural Characteristic. Cultural Characteristics are parts of a groups every life. They are ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members. These same characteristics can also link or divide a region. This basically means, what people think, say, eat and dress are being taught differently throughout there ethnic heritage. ethnic heritage is your families nationality. So you basically learn through what the people around you say, eat, dress. Therefore there are tons of various cultural characteristics. My cultural characteristic is Korean. It is because my family's nationality is Korea and I learned things from Korea. So I dress, eat, say similar to what many Koreans do.

Today in the class Mr.Schick gave us simple assignment. It was getting in to same group that worked the PPT together and looking for the national anthem of the country that we'd researched about and listen. Me and Parker researched about Germany, so we looked for Germany's national anthem. I felt it was similar to most of other countries national anthem but it felt bit stronger bits and German accents are strong so I felt it has power in the music.

As I mentioned in yesterday's blog, today we took the test. I felt this time the test was pretty hard than I expected. I think I've got most of the questions right except few questions. Essay was writing about why it is unacceptable in America the president being assasinated. In wrote it is because the current president is the person that majority of American wanted the president to be. I thought I've putted in pretty much effort but I had to memorized more details specifically. Well I don't know my grades yet but  hope it is satisfying enough.

Today was supposed to be the test day about each countries but there were some problems. So the test was delayed to tomorrow. The test is about the governments and the leaders. The study method is the presentations that many groups have done. My group's ppt was not on the standard studying method but I'll try harder next time. The things I need to know is what kind of government each country have. Who is the leader of the country and how lomg are they expected to stay in the office. The last thing is what are the ways in each countries' people can change their leader. The example is the impeachment laws.

2014년 11월 11일 화요일

November 11th HG Class

Today's class, we had four groups presentating. First group was David and Alex researched about Syria. Syria's type of government is Republic under an Authoritarian Regime. This country is basically dictating country. President of Syria is Bashar Al Assad. He was a president since 2000 and now is his third term. Each term is 7 years. There is no impeachment in Syria. Second group was Steven and Trish presentating about Israel. Israel's type of government is Parliamentary Democracy. Israel was this government since 1948. Prime Minister of Israel is Benjamin Binyamin Natanyahu. He has no limits and he can be prime minister until he dies. Third group was Rosemary and Jessica presentating about Mexico. Mexico is Federal Republic Country since 1823. President of Mexico is Enrique Pena Nieto. He is a president since 2012. Maximum term for president is one term and its 6 years. Last group was Elley by herself presentating about Brazil. Brazil is the Federal Republic country. The president of Brazil is Dilma Rouseff. She was a president since 2011, and she was reelected in 2014. President in Brazil can be reelected two times in a row maximum, but there's no limit how many terms they do. Each terms are 4 years.

November 7th HG Class

Today's presentation was two group first was Karson and Cody presentating about Russia Government. Russia is Semi-Presidential Constitutional Republic government since 1993 December 12th. This is the time when Soviet Union was collapsed. The president of Russia is Vladimir Putin. He started his third term in 2012. The Russia's president was only available two terms maximum. But, he changed that law during his second term, 2 times to 3 times and 4 years each term to 6 years. The impeachment in Russia is mentioned in law but it is almost impossible because most people in Russia like or are scared of Putin. So I feel Russia is Outer Republic Country but inner is sort of dictator country. The second group was Ryan and Megan presenting about China. China's government is communist state since 1956.  President of China is Xi JinPing his first term ends in 2018. The government people vote for their leader. And president is eligible second term maximum. Impeachment in China is not available. It is because China is a communist state govermmemt. But in Hong Kong and Taiwan, impeachment is available because each Hong Kong and Taiwan have different governmemt seperated from China's main government and they are capitalist government. The reason is Hong Kong was UK territory for while and Taiwan was under Japan for while.

November 6th HG Class

November 6th HG Class

Today in class, me and Parker did the presentation. We researched about the Germany Government. To write some informations about Germany Government. Germany Government is the Federal Republic. Federal Republic Government is the government that the leader who were elected from their people has most of the power and makes important decisions. It is also a type of government that many types of government was unified and formed one Republic country. In Federal Republic countries, citizens get to vote for their own leaders. Federal Republic Government in Germany was established during May 23 of 1949 to Oct 3rd of 1990. These is the period that Hitler lost his power by killing himself and to reunification of West Germany and East Germany. Germany was divided into West Germany and East Germany because after World War 2 Germany was the lost war country. So Winner of the war country, US and Soviet Union was in charge of Germany. But US and Soviet Union had different type of society. US is a republic country but Soviet Union was Communist Country. So West Germany which US was in charge had Republic Government, but East Germany where Soviet Union was in charge had Communist Government. But as the Berlin Wall which divided the Germany was collapsed in 1990 they became one United country as a Federal Republic of Germany. Germany's President is Joachim Gauck. He is the President of Germany since 2012 and his term ends in 2017. He is eligible to be reelected one more time for 5years. But the real power of Germany is Angela Merkel, who is the chancellor of Germany. She is the Chancellor of Germany since 2005 and this is her third term. There's no limitation for terms being a Chancellor if Majority of the members in National Assembly of Germany agrees. Impeachment is one of the way citizens can pull the leader out from their office. The impeachment in Germany is if the leader violates the Central  Law of Germany, they are sent to Federal Constitutional Court and Budestag & Bundestrat decides if the leader is guilty or not and choose to remove leader out of office or not. These are informations about Germany Government. Second group was Candle and Adam who researched about Japan. Japan's type of Government is constitutional Monarchy. This is the type of government as UK where there is the leader of the country as well as chief but leader has a power while chief does not. Japan's government is divided into three parts. Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and Judicial Branch Executive Branch includes the Chief of the State and Prime Minister. Legislative Branch includes the bicameral diet. Judicial Branch includes supreme court. Supreme Court of Japan consists of 14 associative judges. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe started his work in December of 2012. Term is 4years each and there is no limit for reelection. Minimum voting age in Japan is 20years old. I was satisfied with my presentation but unhappy because of few people's attitude during my presentation.

Today two group did the presentation. First was Zach and Rory about France. Type of Government that France has is Federal Republic. They were Federal Republic since 1789, The French Revolution. President of France is Francois Hollande. He started on May of 2012, also he is the 24th president of France. President are elected to work for 5years two terms. France also has a Prime Minister he is Manuel Valls. He started working as prime minister since March 31st, 2014. The second group was Veronica and Alyssa who researched about UK(England). England's type of government is Constitutional Monarchy with a Commonwealth Realm. Therefore, they have a chief of the country but the chief does not have a power to be a leader of country. Chief of UK is Queen Elizabeth the second and the Prime Minister is David Cameron. David Cameron started working as a prime minister since May of 2010. He was appointed as a Prime Minister by Queen Elizabeth the Second. Also Queen Elizabeth the Second was the chief of UK for 63 years. Additionally England was Constitutional Monarchy since 1215, and before 1215 England had an Absolute Monarchy Government.

Today's class was also working on the presentation. This was the last class that we can finish our ppt. What I added on my ppt today is I've changed the background of the PPT to Germany flag. What I researched today was impeachable offenses in Germany. Impeachable offenses in Germany is if the leader purposely violates core principles of the federal constitution or a state constitution. Therefore, if the leader purposely breaks important rule from the country law, they can be impeached. By this one week group project I feel like I learned a lot of things about Germany. Also I think I've improved my English pretty much because when write things on PPT after searching on Internet, I had to understand things that I found in the Internet first and in process of understanding informations and trying to change to my own words helped me improving English very much.

In the class today, first we looked over the pop quiz that we took last week. As I said in blog last time I got 87% score by getting 13 correct out of 15 questions. First question I got wrong was what country is Republic under an authoritarian regime. I thought it was Russia but the answer was Syria. Second question I got wrong was asking which leader is trained as physicist, with a PHD in quantum chemistry. I'd choose David Cameron the Prime Minister of U.K but the answer was Angela Merkel the Chancellor of Germany. We also worked on the group PPT that we were working on, and what I researched today was what are the methods that their people can pull their leader out of the office before terms end. The methods are impeach them, assassination and abdicating.

Today's class was working on making group power point. What I researched today was when was the Germany reunified as a Federal Republic of Germany, When Joachim Gauck was president of Germany since and when does his term ends. Also if he is eligible to be reelected. Another thing I researched is when was Angela Merkel the Chancellor of Germany since. First, Federal Republic Government of Germany was established during 1949~1990. On October 3rd of 1990, West Germany and East Germany was reunified as Federal Republic of Germany. Joachim Gauck was president of Germany since 2012, his first term ends in 2017 and he is eligible to be reelected one more time. Angela Merkel was a Chancellor of Germany since 2005, this is her third term and she is eligible to be reelected if majority of member in Germany National Assembly agrees to.

Today's class was basically about making groups for the group work and choose what kind of country will each group do. The group work is about making power point presentation about what kinds of governments each country have, informations about the leaders of the country and methods that people can pitch out from the office their leader out before their valid working days have been come to deadline. My group is me and Parker, we choose to search about Germany. This will be long work and I will try hard to make good result on my first group work in U.S. What I researched during the class today is the type of government that Germany has and the description of that type. Also I researched for Since when was Germany that type of government.

Today in class we had a pop quiz. This is the first pop quiz that I had. It was worth 30 points. I was very nervous because this was the first pop quiz. There were few questions that I did not know. I also thought these were all on the class time, which I felt like I've felt like heard of it but didn't know perfectly. I am writing my blog in the class time, and right now Mr.Schick is telling the grades. My grades didn't came out yet and I am so nervous. Well I just checked my grade and I got 87%. Which means I got 13 right out of 15 questions. Overall it seems like it is not bad grade but I really need to participate in the class more.

Today's class was reviewing the test. As I said in my blog yesterday my score is 94. Which means I only got few questions wrong. The first question I got wrong is ethiopia has a birth rate of 43.66, and a death rate of 11.55 what is RNI? The answer was 32.11 but I wrote 42.11. I can see that I made a mistake. Second question I got wrong is whose net migration rate is highest: Canada, the United States, or Mexico? This is the question that Mr.Schick mentioned in the class that Canada has more people coming in than United States because they have good medical cares. But i forgot that this was in the class and I wrote the United States and I got wrong. I regret that I wasn't paying attention in the class which made me to get wrong in the class. I should focus in class more.

Today was the day that exam score came out. So, we didn't really do anything during the class. We just got a chance to look at our scores on the exam and had a free time. My score was 94 out of 100 again. Well the score I expected was pretty similar but I thought I would at least got 3 or 4 higher than 94. Well I'm satisfying with my grades but the part that I'm unhappy is that I got same score as the last exam. I wanted to see the improvements on my learnings. I didn't got a chance to look at what I got wrong and what I got right. So, what I'm going to do when I receive my test paper. I'm gonna take a look at what I got wrong and compare on the CIA fact book and remind again to perfectly memorize that I can always get that question right. I learned that I need to try harder to get higher grade.

Today was the last day of reviewing before the exam. Tomorrow is the exam day which is very important day. What we reviewed for last is we reminded the meaning of word "Total fertility rate", it means average of the number of children born to a woman. We also reviewed some informations about the population pyramid. This is the graph that shows how many people are in the range divided by certain ages. This shows if the country is low birth rate and high aging or high birth rate and low aging. The most ideal graph is rectangular. Rectangular graph means populations are distributed in all sections of the range. In these societies social issues like a job shortage are not huge issue. For istance U.S. is the example for rectangular society. Which is the first place country in the world.

Oct 8th HG Class

Today, we basically just reviewed what we studied so far in class because the exam is on Oct.10th Friday. We just rewrote the meanings of the words. Meaning of the word "Life Expectancy" is the average of number of years to be lived by people born in the same year, meaning of "Crude Birth rate and the Crude of Death rate" are number of live births per 1,000 occurring among the population of a given geographical area during a given year and number of deaths of per 1,000 occurring among the population of a given geographical area during a given year. Meaning of "Developing nation and Developed nation" are nation with a lower living standard, underdeveloped industrial base, and low Human Development Index(HDI) relative to other country. Also not good infrastructure and nation that has a highly developed economy and advanced technological infrastructure relative to other less industrialized nations. As well as perfect infrastructure. Meaning of " Rate of natural increase(RNI)" is natural population growth depends on  Crude Birth rate and the Crude Death rate. Net Migration rate(NMR) is the difference of immigrants and emigrants of an area in a period of time divided per 1,000 inhabitants. Immigration is people who are moving into the country and the emigration is people coming out of the country. Last two words "Pull forces" and the "Push Forces" means the reason why people come out of the country and move into the country.

Today's class Mr.Schick told us to search for the reasons why America is the world's best country or why not in that CIA world fact book site. I looked for the reasons why U.S is the best country in the world. First U.S' total GDP is first place in the world. Therefore they have largest economy in the world. Second U.S.A is the second place in producing oil. But the interesting fact is U.S is the first place in importing oils, which means they use enormous amount of oil. Third, U.S stock value in the market is the most expensive. Last U.S is the country that has most airports, railway, roadway. This just means that they are developed. In conclusion, I think U.S is still world's best country but they need to work hard to maintain being first place in the world.

Oct 3rd HG Class

In today's class we saw the video that talks about why America is not the best country in the world anymore. We had a lot of discussion on this topic in the class.  Cody was saying he needs to be a politician which was a bit weird answer. Steven was saying America is too focusing on other countries issue, they need to solve their issue first. And the parker was saying U.S. need to sell the fossil fuels that they are not using so that they can pay the money they owe to China. But in my opinion I do not agree with parker. It's because U.S is buying the oli from Southwest Asia because they know when the oil starts get run out it will be much more expensive, so when they sell in future they can earn tons of money incomparable to the money that they will earn by selling now. Basically I still think U.S.A is the world's first country because   They are the center of the world and they  still create a lot of new technology and new create inventions. But I agree that U.S interfere in the other country a lot.

Oct 2nd HG Class

Today's class was basically researching for the countries in the CIA homepage. The interesting facts that I found was that Mexico's economy is world's 10th largest. I was impressed because I did not know that Mexico has this huge economy. But their Personal GDP was low, cause their economy was big by the population. Which means Mexico is not a wealthy country. The other interesting fact that I found was that South Korea, which is my country has 11th largest economy in the world. This was interesting because South Korea's economy is huge compare to our land size. Our land size is one of the smallest in the world and we are over populated. Last interesting fact that I found was that Monaco's Personal GDP is the 2nd in the world. It was because Monaco does not have taxes, so the people who have lot of money establish company, run their own business and the banks(Bank taxes are very low in Monaco). Therefore this Personal GDP is mostly from the wealthy people who has things in Monaco. Additionally, Qatar's Personal GDP is the highest. This was not that interesting because their money is mostly from selling fossil fuels, mostly oil.

Human Geography Oct 1st Class

Oct 1st Class

In today's class Mr.Schick came up with new idea of how to do the class. It was using "Spotify.  Spotify is a place where you can listen to the music easily. So what he's idea is to share their playlists and talk about it. I really like this idea because I am the person who like listening to music. I think everyone in the class have same opinion with me. So what I am gonna do is try to listen to a lot of genre of music what other people listen to and try to figure out what they like.

Sep 30th Human Geography

Today we saw the population pyramid of many different countries and discussed about the differences. First we saw the population pyramid of Nigeria, The population of young new birth was high but the population of the old age was very low. But in the population pyramid of Canada, The population of young people was low and the population of mid and old age was high. We can see the difference between advanced country and the developing country by comparing these two countries. In the case of advanced country birth and death rate are low, living condition is good, and long life expectancy. But in the developing country birth and death rate high, not good living condition such as medical care and short life expectancy. We could also found that advanced countries are developed industrially and developing countries are pre-industrial. For the population pyramid of U.S. it's getting rectangular. These are what we learned today. :)

Sep 26th Human Geography Class

14.09.26 Human Geography

Today's class we got into the CIA website again and we looked for the countries that have some bad conditions. For example most of the African countries' people's life expectation percentages were extremely low and most of them were also ranked in the top part in short life length section. Also the place where are bad situations such as politically, or maybe in war showed huge amount of people going out from their countries. For instance Syria is in real poor conditions in most of the parts so rate shows that 11% of the population is escaping from Syria. This also effected near counties' immigrants percentage to be increased. And the last example was North Korea, North Korea is extremely poor and their leader is one of the worst. But the percentage of people coming out from North Korea was 0.02%. Therefore, North Korea just kills people who tries to escape and most people are not allowed to come out from the country.

Today's class was the class after the retreat. In today's class we reviewed the exam that we had last week. I got an 94% in my exam. I feel happy about my grade cause I've putted pretty much effort preparing for that exam so I'm satisfied with my score. What we reviewed was we talked again about Socrates trial and relation to his death. We also talked about globalization as well. Most important part of globalization is sharing things, which means giving informations. Mr.Schick gave us example of Mr.Miller about exchanging student to Russia from John Carroll in past.

Freshman Retreat

Freshman Retreat

Today I went to a freshman retreat. Retreat was mainly for getting chance to meet a new people and be friends with them. Also there were 5 junior representatives that followed us and gave a lot of advise. We divided in to five groups, every group has one juniors as a leaders and did a lot of group activities. I met a lot of freshman and seems like made many friends. The good part in the retreat was our group leader was Joe the President of Junior. I felt he is really cool guy who has good leadership to lead people. With Joe our group did really awesome activities. Also thanks to Joe it was easier to be friends with the people in our group. Overall I think today I had awesome experiences and get to learn how to study in JC. Also made many friends. I would like to say thank you to Mr.Meyrel and five juniors to help us to awesome day.

Human Geography class

In today's class we talked about people's migration rate. So if the migration rate is the positive number there are more people who migrate in(immigrate) to their country but if the number is negative number it means there are more people who migrate out from their country. Also Mr.Schick showed us some cool site where CIA takes control of it. This site shows a lots of informations about all the country in the world. So we saw the U.S. as our one example U.S. immigrating population was keep decreasing.

The Human Geography Class after Exam

The Human Geography

In beginning of today's class we talked about Scotland is doing the vote to decide being separate from United Kingdom or not. By this Mr.Schick said people who are young such as 10 years old also need to vote. But I disagree with this because there is a reason why young people can't vote. Also it is true that the thing adults' are voting for will effect our lives but children only look for comfortable things. Furthermore, this means people who brought weird pledge will be elected cause they came up with pledges that children will like and children will vote for he or she. After this we talked about why does the female's total life length is usually longer than male's life length. And we got the answer that it's because male goes to military so that was the main reason. In conclusion I always Mr.Schick is an awesome teacher:) ( you should read this Mr.Schick)

The test day

Today I had a exam in Human Geography class. I was nervous about the exam because this exam was the first time taking exam in U.S, also in English. Actually whole today was the exam day cause I had 5 different exams. Well after all I didn't feel that hard. I also prepared a lot but what was on the quiz were all the things that have been taught in the class. So the point is if I listen well in class I don't think it is an hard thing to get a nice grade. The questions on the test were mostly from "message to Garcia", "Ancient Greek" and "Globalization". I did my best in preparing for the test and taking the test so I decided not to be sad though if my grade is low. But still I will be happy if my grades are high:)

My 10th Human Geography Class

My 10th Human Geography Class

In today's class we discussed about how American culture has effected to different cultures. One of the most big effect is an eating culture. Mcdonald's is made huge change to many countries' eating culture. For example Japanese usually ate healthy foods talking with family eating slowly. But after Mcdonalds start imported in Japan, Japanese people started to look for fast cheap food that does not take a lot of time. Also we talked about silk road. Silk road is when European countries imported silks from china in long time ago they had to cross the continent so these ways were called silk Road.

My 9th Human Geography Class

My 9th Human Geography class in JC

In todays class we saw the video called "Did you know?". This video was mostly containing social issues. There were several topics from video that we talked about in class today. First one was if you are one in a million in china there are 1300 people like you. This is basically showing how big the population of China is which was base of their growth. As we looked in the class, most of the things were made in China. It's because Chinese people were doing everything with really low income which made these days China. The second topic was huge change from 2004. 2004 is the year when apps were first invented. After apps were invented the new job that is one of the highest demand job nowadays the app inventor came out. The next one was the U.S. Department of labor said today's learners will have 10~14 different jobs by the age of 38. For instance, people started to change jobs frequently when they have better offers. The last topic was if Facebook was a country it would be the third largest country in the world behind China&India. Therefore a mass of people in the world do Facebook or Twitter. The problem about this is people now do not afraid of posting things online which can cause bad issues. This is summary about what we did in class today and thank you for reading my essay.

My eighth Human Geo class

This is our eighth Human Geography class, time runs so fast that almost a month passed from I came to America till now. This time, Mr. Schick reviewed some of these Ancient Greek words again. Up to this, we could learn it better and understand it deeper. And also, we talked about a topic, it is ”an unexamined life is not worth living”. That is great, I really agree with this sentence. Let me take a example of the school basketball team, if we have not a try out, anyone could join it, thus we cannot find the honors in basketball. That is not a good news for our school. Well these are almost everything we did in eighth class and thank you for reading my brief summary.

Human Geography Class

Sep.4.2014

In today's class we discussed about the words from last class bit more deeper. Agora, Arete, Polis, The year 508BC, Socrates and The death of Socrates are the topics we talked about in today's class. Let's begin with Agora. Agora is the central spot in ancient Greek city-states. This place is spiritual, political place for Ancient Greek people. They have done all the important things like elections here. Second Arete, description for Arete is the act of living life up to full potential. Therefore people find what they are good at and get a chance to develop that potential. Third word is The year 508 BC, This year is one of the most important year in history because in this year the common people rose up to have revolution against there leader. This uprising is special because this was first uprising in the whole human history. Fourth word is Socrates, He is one of the most famous philosophers in the history. To relate this to last word which is The death of Socrates, He was forced to suicide by drinking a poison. The reason he was forced to suicide was because Ancient Greek government said he was corrupting Greek people's rules and mind. Also being against the god. Well history says he could have escape while he was in prison before he died but he didn't wanted that and just drank poison. I think I've learned lots of interesting facts today. Thank you Mr.Schick

A Message to Garcia

In today's Human Geography class we've learned about Elbert Harberd's essay A message to Garcia. This was published in March 18th of 1899. In the beginning it was written to be an article on newspaper or magazine but this article was sold over 40million copies in USA. The article is about during the Spanish American War. The President of United States of America McKinley sent Rowan to send letter to general of Cuba government against army Garcia who was disappeared at that moment. But when Rowan received that letter from Mckinley he didn't ask back where Garcia is and took responsibility of delivering letter and successfully delivered to Garcia. So what this article is showing is Rowan is good representitive of the worker who companies want to hire, not complaining and take responsibility to work they are given and finish successfully.

My Five Point Action plans for successful JC Freshman Year

Plans always follow the success. Therefore, for my successful JC freshman year I need to have specific plans that can lead me to success. So now I'm going to start talking about my five plans.
First, I am going to put lots of effort on my studying to get good grades. Further more I need to do all my assignments on time and study hard for my exams. Doing well on my studying is one of the most important part of having successful Freshman year at JC so I've putted this at first. Second, I need to make great friends and stay in good relationship with them. Having good friends are also one big part of successful school life. To make good friends I need to be friendly and be nice to other guys. Also participate actively in school activities such as playing sports as a part of school team. Third, I need to be good student who teachers like. Teachers are huge part of school and it will effect my school life a lot like my grades so I need to be nice to teachers as well and do what they tell me to do. Fourth, I need to follow school rules not doing things that are restricted. Well for me I think this one is the most important thing school is a group and group has a rule that members need to follow or else the group will be messed up. Also if someone does something that is restricted that person can lose the trust of people so I think this is included in one of my plans. Fifth, which is the last one is I need to work hard improving my English. English is everything living in America but English is not my mother language so I need to work hard and put a lots of effort in to use as normal. English is base of the life in United States so it's not an optional I must learn. These are pretty much done for my Five Point Action plans for successful JC Freshman Year Thank you for reading my essay which needs to be improved a lot ^^.

My First day at John Carroll

Hello, I'm the new international freshman student John Yoon from Korea Republic of. This is my first time studying in  U.S. so I was pretty excited to study in new habits getting different educations and meeting new people. Well it doesn't mean that I wasn't worried about coming to John Carroll I was actually more worried than my excitement. But few things I felt during school got rid of almost all of my worries and made me feel comfortable being a student in John Carroll.

Firstly, the american guys were much more friendly than I expected. What I thought of American kids' before going to school today were they still have a bit of racism so most of them won't like being friend with other racist. But guess what? I was wrong, they always asked me questions and kept talking to me first. Also they knew it is hard for new student to be part of a group so they came to me first which was very kind and I really appreciated that a lot.

Secondly, I was very surprised how the education is being provided to the students. In Korea, every students take same classes. But in John Carroll I got to choose my own classes what I want to do and every students have their own schedules. I was also surprised that no one in John Carroll has same schedule. I realized that in order to do these education a lot of efforts will be required and how hard adults try and research for students.

Last thing I felt is every teacher in John Carroll school is really kind and willing to help students as much as they can when students need help. In the beginning of today students went back and forth the school to listen to teachers' words. I was very satisfied with teachers because every one of them asked international students to stand up and introduce ourselves briefly to other students to help us making friends. Further more I could see teachers think a lot about international students how to help them feel less uncomfortable and to adapt in John Carroll successfully.

In conclusion my overall feeling of John Carroll is Excellent they have a lots of outstanding systems that are beneficial to students as well as international student programs. I believe I can adjust successfully in John Carroll making lots of great friends and graduate John Carroll with satisfying grades. I'm really happy being part of John Carroll and I'll try hard to finish my studying abroad successful. Thank you for reading my essay about my feeling about John Carroll.
