Dec 11th HG Class

Dec 11th HG Class

In today's class, we've got the test papers that we took yesterday back. Well surprisingly, I got the highest score in the class. I've got 32 questions right out of 33 questions so I've got 97%. This was surprising result to me because I was little worried about my score because I missed the last class before the quiz which is the review session. Well I think I've been rewarded what I worked. So I feel very proud and happy. Also my score was the highest among the class. We also did the review of the test. We went over all the questions and now I know the answer of the question that I got wrong. I feel I need to prepare harder for my mid term exam.

Dec 10th HG Class

I was absence for the class yesterday because I was sick. But today I felt better so I came to school.
As Mr.Schick mentioned pretty while ago, today we took the test about Cultural Characteristics and the movie Slum dog Millionaire. Though I wasn't in class yesterday, so I missed some parts and the review time for the quiz. But I studied pretty hard at night yesterday with my Chinese friends Ryan and Alex. Test was pretty fine than I thought. I was worried about the test because it can be very effective if you miss the class just before the test. I can say that I've putted a lot of effort on these so that I don't have to feel bad looking at my score. There were some questions that were confusing but I hope my grades are pretty fine.

Dec 4th HG Class

In the beginning of today's class Mr.Schick told us about his experience working in the film field. It was pretty interesting that he worked with so many celebrities. After that we started talking about cultural characteristic again. Today, what we basically talked about cultural characteristics was about the organizations in the world.

Spatial divisions
  • Spatial divisions are how we divide the livable space found on the earth by establishing  social, economic, and political control
  • You can be a member of more than one spatial group
  • Spatial divisions can also cause conflicts or cooperation

Examples of Spatial Divisions
  • Countries
  • Economic Alliances - European Union(EU), Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC)
  • OPEC is the organization of the countries who sells the oils to other countries. They meet frequently and discuss how much they are going to sell oil.

In today's Human Geography class, we talked about the examples of religion from Cultural Characteristic. Well, the main point of today's discussion was though all the religions are based on peace and to corporate but why are they fighting killing each other because of the religion difference. Well in my opinion, it is really weird to fight because of the religion difference. Because I don't have a religion so I don't know what they teach in the churches and the temples, but I'm pretty sure all those religions are based on peace, share and help. These are the examples of religion difference fights happened in the world.
  • Religion can be both a unifying force.
  • There are five major religions in the world today--Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
  • They have millions of followers all believing the same thing
  • Religion can also be a dividing force around the world.
  • Hindus and Muslims fight in India(Hindu) and Pakistan(Muslim)
There are conflicts between Catholics and Protestants (two forms of Christianity) in Northern Ireland

Dec 2nd HG Class

Today's class Cultural Characteristic. Cultural Characteristic are parts of a group everyday life. They are ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members. These same characteristics can also link or divide a region. The most important word in the definition of Cultural Characteristic is to teach.
Examples of Cultural Characteristics would be language, religion, and ethnic heritage

Language
  • Arabic unites the Arab world
  • Spanish unites the Hispanic world
Brazil is the only South American nation which does not speak Spanish. They speak Portuguese.
Canada is a bilingual nation. French and English are their official languages.

-Switzerland has multiple languages but very little conflict between the groups
-English is now considered the world language and is used for most business transactions around the world

Ethnic Heritage
  • In Yugoslavia, many ethnic groups were made into one country (Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Albanians).
  • When strong leadership died out, the different groups fought a very bloody civil war and now they all have separate countries

Example of Cultural Characteristics
  • In the countries of Rwanda and Burundi in Africa, Two ethnic groups are dominant, the Tutsis and the Hutus.
  • When one group is in power and they persecute another. Hutus<->Tutsis
  • There are constant war going on between Hutus and Tutsis
  • On the island of Cyprus, the Greeks and the Turks try to gain control

  • US and Switzerland have peacefully merged multiple ethnic groups in their countries.(people come to US from all over the world)
  • Korean and Japan primarily one ethnic group
